The area became famous for its rich agate deposits in the early 20th century, and Holley Blue Agate quickly gained a reputation as one of the most beautiful and sought-after varieties. The gemstone’s vivid lavender-blue colors distinguish it from other agates, which are generally more muted in tone.
Holley Blue Agate is a form of chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz. Like all agates, it forms in volcanic cavities where silica-rich water percolates through rock over thousands or even millions of years. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind concentric layers of silica, which eventually harden into the banded structure characteristic of agates. The specific conditions in Holley—rich in minerals like manganese—are responsible for the stone’s unique coloration.”
