Hampton Butte in central Oregon is a famous location for unique, colorful petrified wood, especially rare gem-quality green varieties colored by copper/iron, dating to the Oligocene (30-40 million years old) from the Clarno Formation.
Hampton Butte is one of the few places globally known for producing such distinctively colored and gem-quality petrified wood, making it highly sought after by collectors and rockhounds.
